Posters… a Link Between Arctic Science and Northern Community
M-A Elie and P. Clarkson (Gwich’in Renewable Resource Board, P. O. Box 2440, Inuvik, NT, X0E 0T0; http://www.grrb.nt.ca/)
An important function of the Gwich’in Renewable Resource Board (GRRB) is to inform Gwich’in resource users and the general public about wildlife, fish, and forestry co-management. Effective community-based management depends on a well-informed public that can participate in decision-making and management activities. An important tool the GRRB uses to inform the local community is the poster. Well designed posters are an ideal means of communicating information to local resource users as they: 1) catch a person’s attention, 2) present a few easily-understood main points in a simple format, 3) do not rely on an effort from the community members to read reports or go to meetings, 4) are inexpensive to make, 5) provide contact information for people who need more details, and 6) new posters can continually provide up-to-date information. Good posters do not provide a lot of detail, but identify who a person can contact for more details. The GRRB has been successful in using posters to ask for input on important issues, encourage cooperation for resource projects, report results of studies and advertise events.
