The Porcupine Caribou Herd, a large population of migrating Grant's Caribou (Rangifer tarandus-granti), has been an important part of the Northern Yukon's natural environment for thousands of years.
The year-round range of the Herd includes much of north-eastern Alaska, northern Yukon and the Richardson Mountains of the Northwest Territories. The Herd migrates annually from wintering grounds in north-central Yukon and Alaska to calving and summer range, north of treeline and along the Beaufort Sea coast. The range of the Herd falls within many different land management regimes.
The Porcupine Caribou Herd plays a critical role in the culture and economy of the Gwich'in, Inuvialuit, Inupiat and Northern Tutchone peoples. The link between the Porcupine Caribou and First Nations has existed for thousands of years.
This chart shows how important the Porcupine Caribou are to the economies of the villages within and near the Herd's range.
