The Third Annual Gathering of the Northern Yukon/Arctic Borderlands Ecological Knowledge Co-operative took place on March 23, 24 and 25 in Inuvik, NWT. The main focus of the gathering was to review information on indicators developed over the past two years. Results from the second year of the Community-based Ecological Monitoring project were presented and discussed. Partipants spent some time looking at how information from indicators and local knowledge can be used to provide important information on how the ecosystem works and monitoring for signs of stress.
Discussions at the Gathering also addressed the question of how the Co-op should be evolving. It was decided that the Co-op should try to slowly expand its activities and focus to include more participation from Alaska. In recognition of this greater geographical scope, the name of the organization was changed from Northern Yukon Ecological Knowledge Co-op to Arctic Borderlands Ecological Knowledge Co-op. It was also decided that the Co-op should look into obtaining charity organization status, which would allow the organization to apply for non-government sources of funding.
