What is happening?
- This map provides a record of the seismic lines and well heads located in the northern Yukon.
- The majority of these seismic lines and wells were put in prior to the opening of the Dempster Highway in 1979.
- The cluster of lines along the Beaufort Sea between Shingle Point and Herschel Island are on the extreme eastern edge of the area used by caribou in June and early July.
- The seismic lines and wells near the Dempster Highway are located in the wintering range of the Porcupine Caribou herd.
Why is it important?
- Along the Eagle Plains plateau seismic lines and roads must be cut through forested areas and this may allow easier access for hunters.
- Extensive networks of roads and industrial development can contribute to habitat fragmentation.
Technical Notes
- The map data on seismic lines and wells were obtained as shapefiles (files used by ArcView GIS) from the YTG Dept. of Economic Development website. The Dempster Highway is shown but more recent roads such as the winter road to Old Crow are not shown.
