Community Populations in U.S.

Community Populations in U.S.

What is happening?

  • These four American communities have increased considerably in size in the last thirty years. For example numbers in Venetie increased by 80% and numbers in Kaktovik more than doubled. Since 1990 numbers in Arctic Village and Kaktovik have increased by 60% and 30% respectively.

Why is it important?

  • Growing communities may place more pressures on the local environment to support humans needs. For example, larger numbers of people would likely increase demand for infrastructure (waste disposal, drinking water), air traffic and country food.

Technical Notes

  • Data were obtained from the U.S Census Bureau. Numbers for Kaktovik prior to 1970 were not available on a comparable basis as people living in the area before that census were widely scattered.
