Storm Frequency

Low pressure days at Inuvik

What is happening?

  • This graph shows the number of days with sea level pressure reaching a level at or below 99.5 Kpa (kilopascals) at Inuvik, NWT. There are no trends apparent in the data.

Why is it happening?

  • Measures of barometric pressure are often a good indicator of the occurrence of stormy weather in an area, as storms are generally associated with low pressure systems. The frequency of storms in an area is one factor that may change as a result of global climate change.

Why is it important?

  • Storms affect the lives of animals and humans because they generate harsh and sometimes dangerous weather conditions. Human structures such as buildings and equipment may be damaged in storms, and animals may have difficulty following migration routes during stormy periods.
  • A change in storm frequency may also cause a change in precipitation levels for an area.

Technical Notes

  • A day was included in the sum of days with pressure below 99.5 Kpa if pressures at or below the 99.5 threshold were recorded at any time on that date.
