What is happening?
- This graph shows the number of water licences issued each year in the Yukon portion of the Borderlands study area.
- There are relatively few water licences issued each year and almost all have been multi-year licenses associated with water use for domestic purposes (e.g. the Village of Old Crow or maintenance camps along the Dempster Highway).
- There are some water uses that do not require a water licence and these are called a Notification of water use without a licence. There have been relatively few of these recorded each year. The slight increase in 2007-08 was associated with an increase in mineral exploration activities.
Why is it happening?
- Many industrial activities trigger the need for a water licence, either to use water or deposit waste back into a water body. Tracking the number of licences issued each year may be one way of tracking the rate of development.
Why is it important?
- Tracking the various permit applications may help identify emerging trends or areas of new development.
Technical Notes
- The recent information on water use was obtained from the Yukon Water Board with older records obtained from DIAND Water Resources.
