Pre and Post Conference Activities

Wild places are all around in the Yukon. We hope that you will take some time to explore the rivers, lakes, and trails. As the conference ends, the famous Dawson City Music Festival is getting underway.

The Yukon Conservation Society, a local non-profit organization, offers free guided interpretive hikes in the Whitehorse area 7 days a week between 10:00 am and 5:00 pm. Contact YCS at 867-668-5678, or visit their office at 302 Hawkins St., Whitehorse.

Day Canoe Journey: Yukon River
Paddle the Yukon River, famous route of the 1898 Gold Rush seekers. No paddling experience necessary. Cost: $165/person plus GST. Includes pick up and return to hotel, lunch, all group gear including canoes, life jackets and paddles. Minimum 3, maximum 10 persons.

2 or 3 Day Canoe Trip: Kusawa Lake
An easy to moderate canoe trip of 2 or 3 days with spectacular scenery. Your fully qualified guides will also take you on a light hike to capture the views of the lake and surrounding mountains. No experience necessary.
Cost: 2 Day Trip $380 + GST; 3 Day Trip $550 + GST. Includes pick up and return to hotel, all group gear (tents, cooking equipment, stoves, canoes, life jackets and paddles). Minimum 3, maximum 10 persons.

Day Hike: St. Elias Mtn. Range
Come hike amongst the spectacular beauty of the St. Elias Mtn. Range. Easy to moderate.
Cost: $125/person plus GST. Includes pick up and return to hotel, all group gear and lunch. Minimum 3, maximum 10 persons.

Relaxing on the River
Enjoy a relaxing float down the Yukon River aboard a replica of a Gold Rush Stampeders raft. 1/2 day (afternoon), $51.00 per person. Includes: all transportation and an interpretive tour covering Gold Rush history on the Yukon River and a stop at Canyon City. Minimum 2 persons.

Whitewater Rafting: Tatshenshini River
Paddle through grade II-IV rapids as you slip through three United Nations World Heritage Sites. Full day $165.00 per person Includes: transportation to/from Blanchard River launch (near Haines Junction), gear (wet suits, helmets, paddling jackets, life vests) and lunch. Minimum 4 persons.

Bear Country
Enjoy a guided hike and lunch out on the trail on the doorstep of Kluane National Park. Your guide will also teach you about bear behaviour and key safety tips. Full day $155 per person. Includes: transportation to/from Haines Junction, instruction, guided hike and lunch. Minimum 2 persons.

Skagway Shuffle
Drive to Carcross where you board the White Pass and Yukon Route Railway. The train will take you to Skagway, Alaska where you overnight. Shop or take the water taxi to Haines, Alaska before venturing back to Whitehorse the next day. (This can also be shortened to a day trip.) 2 days $250 per person based on double occupancy. Includes: transportation to/from Carcross/Skagway, train fare and accommodation in Skagway. Minimum 6 persons.

Dawson City Package
Enjoy the Dawson City Music Festival 600 km north of Whitehorse after the conference, from July 20-22. 3 days, $375 per person based on double occupancy. Includes: 2 nights accommodation at the Downtown Hotel, tickets to the Dawson City Music Festival and an economy rental vehicle with 200 free kilometers. Optional add-on: Ancient Voices Wilderness Camp: includes river tour, camp visit and dinner, $75.00 per person for 7 hours. Note: Book well in advance to ensure festival tickets.

Atlin Meanderings, July 14-17
Kayak the waters of Canada's "little Switzerland," Atlin Lake. Picturesque islands harbour protected campsites and sculpted shorelines lure us out hiking. Cost: $790 plus GST. Includes: pick up and drop off at your hotel. Minimum 6, maximum 8 persons.

Bonneville Lakes, July 17, 8 am to 6 pm
Hike through alpine meadows, along scenic ridgelines, and beside blue
tundra lakes. Cost: $85 plus GST. Includes pick up and drop off at your hotel. Minimum 6, maximum 8 persons.

Tombstone Park Reconnaissance, July 23-28, 6 days
Fly by helicopter from Dawson City into the heart of the Ogilvie Mountains. Explore the alpine meadows and towering granite spires of the Ragged Range before backpacking out to the fabled Dempster Highway. Transportation to and from Whitehorse included. Cost: $1150/person .Minumum 4, maximum 8 persons.

Dog Sledding
Meet the dog mushers, pet the dogs, hitch up the team and go mushing (the sled is on wheels in the summer). Hiking and horseback riding are also options. 1/2 day, $75.00 per person. Traditional First Nations Camp
Share the rich history and culture of the Southern Tutchone people as they take you on a tour that ends in the Longhouse around coffee, tea and homemade bannock. 1/2 day, $75.00. Includes: transportation to and from your hotel. Minimum 12 persons.
