Uncertain Future, Deliberate Action

FINAL Program
19 March 2001

Sunday March 18, 2001
Field Trip #1: Micro-hydro at Fraser and Skagway
9:00 am - 5:00 pm

Visit two micro-hydro sites located near the B.C./Alaska border, two hours southwest of Whitehorse along the scenic Klondike Highway. The Fraser facility supplies power to the Department of Highways maintenance camp and the Canada Customs building. The Skagway site includes a dramatic vertical drop to supply the power needs of the town. Tour historic Skagway, and enjoy sight seeing along the way. Note: as this field trip crosses the Canada/U.S. border, please make sure you bring appropriate identification (e.g., driver's license, birth certificate, or passport). Guides - Perry Diamond, Stan Selmer.

Field Trip #2 - Wind Turbines North of the 60th Parallel at 4700 ft Elevation
9:00 am - 1:00 pm

Rime ice, high winds, sub-zero temperatures and icy mountain roads - it's all in a day's work for the Yukon Energy Corporation's wind team. Come and see what it's all about! Start the day with a video, slide show and question-and-answer session with YEC's wind specialist John Maissan. Then take a trip up Haeckel Hill for a tour of YEC's Bonus 150 kW and new Vestas V47 660 kW wind turbines, in situ. Note: as this field tirp is to a high elevation, mountainous location, be sure to dress warmly and wear appropriate footwear. Guides - John Maissan, Doug Craig.

Field Trip #3 - Energy Efficient Buildings/Solar Energy
1:00 pm - 5:00 pm

Enjoy a half-day tour of some of the solar units and energy efficient buildings in town. You will see local, practical applications of this solar technology, and examples of energy efficient and inefficient buildings. The tour will conclude at the Yukon Energy Corporation Headquarters, an award winning building for energy efficiency, where you will have a chance to met the architects and facilities manager for a tour of the building. Guides: Doug MacLean, Kris Selzer

An informal sightseeing trip will also be offered.
