Northern Climate Change Schools Program

Weledeh Catholic School Climate Change Skit

Narrator 1 (Sam): Before Christmas almost everyone in our school participated in a survey. The survey asked questions about how we come to school. Our class is going to present the results of the survey to you today.

Jesslyn: Here's what a Weledeh morning looks like. Here's how we get to school. Each one of us is pretending to be twelve of you. (someone holds up 12 puppets to show audience)

Narrator 1: Seventy of us walk to school each morning.

Jesslyn: Two of us ride our bicycles all year round. More of us bicycle in the summer.

Narrator 1: Sixty-eight of us ride the school bus to school.

Jesslyn: One hundred and two of us come in cars, trucks or vans.

Justin: What does it matter how we get to school?

Clarissa: It matters. If you are driving, you're burning fossil fuel. Carbon dioxide and other gases go up in the atmosphere. They are changing our climate. Scientists have made that clear.

(all cars and someone from the bus hold up the balloons, everyone shakes their head)

Mary: What can we do to turn things around? How can we change what we do here on the ground?

Car pool skit (Chi and Kayla -- one person pops balloons) -- Separate skit to explain the concept and the details or organizing a carpool.

Ride the bus skit (Shawna and Clarissa, Shawna pops balloons) -- Demonstration of bussing a number of students together using a cardboard bus. This was a mime)

Douglas: I live close enough to school. I could walk with a friend. (Pops balloons)

Daniel: What if you live too far to walk or ride a bike and can't take the bus? Is there something else you can do about climate change?

Justin: Yes there is.

(Despicable lunch skit, Justin and Patrick)

Justin: Patrick, join me for lunch. (boys sit and open lunches, Patrick discards wrappers on desk and floor)

Justin: That doesn't look like a very healthy lunch Pat, and look at the mess you are making with the wrappers!

Pat: Well, it tastes good and its real easy to make a quick lunch in the morning.. What's that in your lunch?

Justin: An apple and a whole wheat sandwich. This juice container can be washed out and used all week instead of throwing it out.

Pat: Hmmm, I'll try that tomorrow.

 Recycling skit (Arisa and Christine)

(Enter Arisa and Christine)
Chris: Speaking of recycling Arisa, I saw you taking a load of newspapers and glass to the blue containers yesterday.

Arisa: Yes, we recycle glass, tin cans and papers as well as compost food at home. It reduces the amount of garbage that goes into landfills.

Arisa and Christine turn to audience:
What are you doing to reduce energy use and slow climate change?

Others form chorus

Electricity skit (Trevor and Douglas?)

Regroup for rap. Put on ball caps backwards?
