School Participation in the Project

This project is a good opportunity to involve and teach school aged children more about Porcupine Caribou and some of the technology we use to learn about them. Students can learn about satellite technology, computer skills (such as use of the Internet and downloading information from a Web page), mapping skills (either computer aided or hand drawing caribou locations on a topographical map), and Porcupine Caribou Herd ecology and management.

Wildlife satellite telemetry technology has been used as an educational tool before by numerous schools at various grade levels. For example, students in 3 U.S. states along the Pacific Flyway followed Canada Geese during their seasonal migrations. Students in Old Crow followed a wolf which was collared on the North Slope and moved to an area 80 kilometers southwest of Old Crow.

New caribou locations will posted on this Web site every week. Any school can log onto the Web site and down-load files. Those files contain a caribou ID, the location in latitude and longitude of each caribou, and the date, time and accuracy rating of each location. We will also be posting a map of the same locations.
