| Eco-tourism Scenario | |||||||
|
We see this scenario as one in which small numbers of people visit Old Crow. Visitors are sensitive to the environment and interested in the local culture. This scenario has small-scale operations with local ownership and control. There are 600 visitors to Old Crow each year. Visitor groups consist of 20 people or less. We assume territorial funding will be available to establish businesses. We see the first ten years as a time for the community to plan for new enterprises, secure funding and construct facilities. Over the 40-year period, there are twenty local enterprises that start up, most of these during years 15 through 25. The eco-tourism scenario has 80 new jobs --over the baseline--associated with it. Job growth is in the middle part of the 40-year period when businesses start up. Tourism jobs are somewhat different than those already existing in Old Crow. Nearly all jobs are seasonal, with relatively low earnings and skill/education requirements. Because these jobs are funded by non-local spending, they are vulnerable to shifts in outside economic conditions and trends in tourism. |
