The lakes vary from relatively clear to extremely turbid. This is probably related to the exposure, especially in the larger lakes, of clays originally deposited by the periglacial lake which occupied the Old Crow Basin prior to 12,000 years ago. The turbid lakes often clear up during protracted periods of calm weather.
