Wastes
- Community recycling and composting programs have become established
in the Yukon over the past six years
and
the amount of waste diverted from landfills has increased. Up
to 75 per cent of the solid waste in Whitehorse could be recycled
or reused. Materials received in Whitehorse for recycling include
aluminum, office paper, newspapers, brown paper bags, tin cans,
corrugated cardboard, plastic drink containers and household batteries.
- There is no central storage facility for hazardous wastes
in the Yukon. Companies that produce these wastes must store them
until they are shipped out for disposal. Waste oil makes up 69
per cent of the hazardous waste produced in the Yukon.
